In this week we have been focusing on research for example we had to create a questionnaire which i need to post on Facebook an get feedback from the target audience  www.surveymonkey.com/s/W8WN3D5 and this consists of me asking questions that would help me gather information on my target audience regarding their preferences when it comes to music videos.

I also evaluated my pitch and the presentation that i had done in front of the class and looked at the strengths and the weaknesses and how to improve.

Evaluation of media pitch.

Artist pitch and focus group 

For my pitch I presented my idea to my classmates then had a focus group were they would ask questions and exchange some of their ideas.

For my presentation i created a  Microsoft power point to present my ideas, within this presentation i showed my artists song and told my classmates about the artists and then explained my ideas to the class. I then went on to talk about my location and characters.

Some things that I could have improved in my pitch were my presenting as i rushed through the power-point which might have left some parts of my idea unexplained or misunderstood.

I think that I also should have left my song playing in the background or left it on for longer as it would have let the audience understand my song better and listen to the lyrics and compare it to my idea better as i only left the song on for half of it.

This is the focus group that i conducted with my class mates to see what they think of my idea and whether they would change anything or improve anything.

In this focus group i was asked a number of things such as my props, Ethnicity, Characters , Camera movement ,mise en scene, themes and lighting.

Ways that i could improve my focus group would be that i should have put across more of my ideas and asked what they thought of it as there a part of my target audience regarding the age therefore i would have been able to gain feedback off of my target audience.

However although i rushed through my presentation i think that the audience understood my ideas as there was few questions that was asked in the focus group .

In this section i will be analysing 5 music videos that appeal to me and has influenced my ideas for my music video. 

My first video is drake ft Rhianna -Take care.

Target audience- The target audience for this video would be male and females from the age of 16 years old above as the lyrics in the songs mean more to the age groups as they can understand the meaning and maybe can relate therefore would appeal to them more as we be able to relate to the song better. 

Conventions/styles- The conventions that are involved in this video are mainly relationships and the song is talking about how the female character has been hurt in the past and this is shown in the video as the videos lighting as been made grey and slightly black and white which is meant to represent how hurt the character is and reflects on the mood of the song.

Costumes- The costumes in this video play a major part in the video as Rhianna is just wearing a jumper which is used to show the vulnerability of the character and make her in a less powerful position then the other character who is drake and who is fully clothed which shows that he is in a higher position and is in control.Both characters are wearing dark or light clothes to match the mood. 

Narrative- The narrative of the video is simple as it is both artists singing and showing them together and then separate from each other .

The narrative part of this video has influenced on my ideas as the idea of showing both characters together and separate appealed to me and matches my song and adds another side to my narrative as the audience will be able to see both characters perspectives. 

My second video would be Rick Ross ft drake & Chrisette Michele- Aston martin music

Target audience-  The target audience of this music video would be from 15 years old onwards as they are at the age to understand the meaning of the song as it has a strong meaning that can be applied to anyone which is why it targets males and females however as the main figures in the video are men it probably targets the males more .

Conventions/styles - The conventions in this music video is typical of the genre as it has Cars and women in the video however both are not portrayed in the same way throughout the video as usually symbolises the wealth of the artist however in this video it highlights the achievement side rather then wealth which is why it has a wide target audience.    

Costumes-  The costumes conform to the conventional types of clothing in the genre of music as we see the expensive and loud clothes and colours which is used good as it matches the song and the type of people you would expect to be in this song. 

Narrative- I think that the narrative of this song is one of the key features due to the meaning as it highlights the sense of achievement and self belief of the child in the video who says hes gonna own the car and then cuts to when hes older and has the car. 

I think the costumes  , narrative and the target audience of this video has all influenced me to make sure that i look at the small details in my work and make sure things match as well as they do in this video.

The third video that has influenced my choices for my production is : French Montana-Ain't worried

Target audience- The target audience for this video would be teenagers to young adults due to the themes of the song as they appeal to them at that age due to media and other texts nowadays therefore they see the video and want to be that artist as they use the video to showcase their wealth. 

Conventions/styles- The main conventions of this video is wealth which is split into a number of things such as cars and accessories such as chains and and clothes which is typical for this style of song and the genre therefore has conformed with the stereotype of the music industry.   

Costumes-  The costumes in this music video is good as it is what you expect from this type of artist for example allot of artists in this genre would wear a plain coloured top like the artist in this video, they also used the costume to put across the point of wealth as they had the artist wearing lots of chains which is also something that we see a lot of.  

Narrative-  For this music video there isn't really a narrative its just the artists with other artists partying in the streets which happens allot in this genre as they use the video to showboat their money. 

Thing that i liked in this video was the editing as the cuts are edited to the beat very good and in a fast paced song like this it is difficult and this is what i will try to include in my video as it is important to cut in the right places. 

The fourth video that had an influence on me was-Kayne west - all falls down. 

Target audience-  The target audience of this video would be males and females from the age of 15years old onwards  and it would appeal to the males and the females as the song is about another female it could relate to the female audience therefore it targets them and it also targets the males with the actors used for example the female actor who is one of the main characters and is attractive therefore will target some males. 

Conventions/styles- The conventions in this song are not the typical things that would be included as the artist is criticising the way people use the normal things life in general, however a style that the artist used that was appealing to me was the camera view used for example he used the camera view in first person so we are seeing everything from he's point of view. 

Costume-The costumes that are used in this music video are typical of the genre however is more smarter however this is to reflect the lyrics in the song.

Narrative- The narrative of the song is that the males partner is leaving the country and he's taking her to the airport as he's using the interpretative technique he links the lyrics with the video at different points however this isn't shown throughout the video. 

The animation that is used in this video is something that i want to try and include in my video and the way the lyrics match the video occasional as i believe it would match my song and make it more appealing.

  The video remake which was done last year has had a big influence on my planning for my music video as it showed me the problems that i will be facing and how to react to them. For example one of the problems which i had was the lip sync as it was difficult to lip sync to a fast paced song like thrift shop therefore had a big influence on the song choice.

It also showed me what type of genres are successful with the audience as they liked the humor that we added into our video.Another thing that helped me was the angles as it showed me that i need to experiment with more angles as it makes the video more enjoyable and is easier to cut to the beat.

In this week we looked at the different approaches to making a music video and how song music videos are typical however with a slight change for this we looked at Carly rae jepsons "call me" as it had a "red herring" at the end of the music video. 

We then went onto looking at the Equilibrium theory and looked at the change in Robbie Williams music video for "shes the one".

Neale- A system of orientation , expectations and conventions which circulates between industry , text and subject.

The music video we watched was B.I.G-Sky's the limit, Some of the typical conventions we see in this video are: Money , Cars , live performance and women , this is typical for this genre which is hi pop/ rap.

This video meets my exepectations in different aspects for example one of them is due to the mise en scene of the video as there was the typical big house and expensive cars which is typical of this style of videos however the editing of the video is slightly different as it is edited softer and slower then others in this genre which suits the song and video and isn't typical of this genre , therefore this video does meet my expectations although the editing was slightly different.

Repetition and differences (twists)-This is the typical styles we see however with a twist.

The video i watched that outlined this was Blink- All the small things.
The things that conformed with the normal conventions was that they used live performance in there music video.however the things that subvert in their music video are: parody which was used for humour.

The genre that the artists i have chosen is R&B/Soul music , this type of music appeals to 16-20 years old and would appeal to males and females however mainly females as the type of song is a typical R&B song.

I have chosen to target the song at older teenagers such as 16 years old on wards , male and females as they would be able to relate with the song at their age therefore would find it more appealing as they can associate with the lyrics and have a better understanding of the meanings behind the lyrics .This is important as audience need to connect and relate to the song as it creates the relationship with the audience therefore what leads to a strong fan base. The song "Callin me"  is about a girl which is typical for the genre and the lyrics are talking about a girl who he is seeing and is explaining the girl and there experiences which is what they are singing about throughout the song. The chorus of the song is simple they just repeat the the main lines in the song  

The tempo of the song is medium paced and very soft which reflects the Genre of soul and some R&B songs and it also reflects on the story of the song as it is similar to a love song.Due to this i will use allot of cuts and medium paced edits as it will match the tempo of the song, this will also be done as i want it to be slightly impressionist.

If I was given permission to use this song i would make like a typical R&B music video which would be boy meets the girl and it all ends happy as usual.  

Style and conventions of music videos

Animation-  is the rapid display of a sequence of static images and/or objects to create an illusion of movement. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although there are other methods, This is demonstrated in kayne west's music video called "Heartless".

This would be used to keep the audience entertained and to get them interacting with the video and artist, this was also used to attract a certain target audience which I believe is the young adults.

This would be used in my music video in a similar way if it is used as it would help interact with the audience.

Performance- This is when a artist performs in there music video as it gives the audience an insight into the artists tours and concerts therefore is used for extra advertisement for in example Bruno mars has done this in he's new music video "If I was your man".

This type of video is used as the artist mainly wants to focus on the song therefore keep the video simple like this one.

If I was to use this it would be to a slow song so the lyrics of the song is emphasized.



Narrative- This is when there is a story behind the song and it is shown in the video and gives the song a different dimension for example this is shown in 2 pac's "Ghetto Gospel".

This is used to emphasise the lyrics and make the song emotionally connect with the audience as it highlights similar situations and/or events that they can relate to.

If I was to use this in my music video then it would be with a song that has important lyrics and can be made to relate to people.



Surreal-  This is when a music video uses unreal themes  for example this is shown in tinie tempeh's "Wonder man".

This technique is used to attract a certain target audience and keep the music video entertaining.

If I was to use this technique It would be used to a past pace beat only as it would match what's going on.




Impressionist-This is when the mood of the music video sets the tone of the song for example this is shown in Game's video "see no evil" as the mood of the video matches the song.

This would be used to set the mood of the audience and keep them watching as it builds a enigma of what's happening.

This would be used in my music video to add a seriousness to the video and the song.




Interpretive-This is when the music video is ambiguous and allows the audience to find there own meaning into the video .

This would be used to create an enigma around the song and gets the audience talking about the song.

I would use this in my video if I wanted to contrast the song and video as it allows the audience to talk about the song more.






Referencing-  This is when the music video is used to promote  another thing for example this is done in the new James bond film as Adele sings "skyfall" which is the song name and the film name.

This would be done to promote two things at the same time and use both target audiences.

This wouldn't be used in my music video as I would only be promoting one artist .




Pastiche/Homage- This is when a style is used to show how the style is loved and is usually from iconic films/programs and artists.

This would be used because of past success in the technique and the high popularity of the style.

Progression From Year 12

Since i started media in Year 12 my skills have developed allot due to the steps that i was making to improve and understand techniques better, for example at the start of the year we was taught about camera angles and there rules for example the first thing we learnt was the rule of third and then other angles, we then was given a scenario and was told to use the angles in this piece of filming; this helped me understand the angles better and how to practise the technique in order to improve.

We then Had to make a opening sequence after , where we had to make our own scenario and choose the angles for ourselves which helped me understand when to use certain angles, we also learnt how to use allot of digital technology for example i used imovie to edit the filming and photo shop and live type, i also learnt how to use Blogger and issue.

Before making the opening sequence we also conducted allot of research on the topic which also improved my skills as i had to update my blog and issuu weekly which helped me improve my navigation on both sites.    

 

Some of the research that I conducted throughout the year consisted of many types for example when planning my opening sequence of a BSR film i conducted a focus group to gain the opinions of our target audience.

We also did some research on our target audience to see the type of things the was interested in and ho to appeal to them for dis was done by posting a blog on blogger(Meet my audience).

Production log 1

In this week I have analysed my performance in my opening sequence regarding organisation and other things which has outlined what I  need to improve on when making my music video for example I found that last year I wasn't as organised as  I should be as I was loosing tack of track of the schedules that I had set.

I have also decided to work with Jaya as one of her strengths is organisation which would help me become more organised and she is also creative and we work well together.

In this week we also had to find a music artist that we can present to the class and make a pitch on why we have chosen them. My artists was Jackie boyz was was no longer unsigned however i have received permission to use the song therefore have proceeded with the tasks on the song.  The artist has been contacted via email and twitter as there was no reply on the email that i had sent.
